Philippe Tassin appointed professor in Applied Physics at Chalmers University

Congratulations to Dr. Philippe Tassin on his recent appointment as a professor in the Department of Applied Physics of Chalmers University, Göteborg, Sweden. Philippe obtained a M.Sc. in electrical engineering with majors in applied physics and photonics at the VUB in 2005. With a grant of the Science Foundation-Flanders (FWO), Philippe went on for a Ph.D. on photonic metamaterials under the supervision of Prof. Irina Veretennicoff and Prof. Jan Danckaert. One can say that they initiated the research on metamaterials in our Applied Physics research group.

Later on, as a postdoc in Ames Lab, Iowa, US in the group of Prof. Costas Soukoulis (doctor honoris causa of the VUB), he continued his work on the classical analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency in metamaterials, he studied the role of graphene for metamaterials, and he investigated fundamental problems related to the electrodynamics of metamaterials including dissipative loss and dispersion. A few of his articles are already remarkably well cited despite being only a few years old, illustrating the impact of his work in the scientific community. We are convinced that Philippe has a bright career ahead of him and we are looking forward to continuing collaborating with him.
